There’s even a quick 15-minute hike to the peak, so the little ones can see the view without running out of steam.
3. Wildlife Sightings
There’s nothing like spotting wildlife to add some excitement to your week! At Sawnee, you could see squirrels, rabbits, deer, raccoons, wild turkeys, red-tailed hawks, owls, and many other animals and birds. So, keep your eyes peeled and your camera ready!
4. Abandoned Gold Mines
The Georgia Gold Rush was an exciting part of history that you can see up close at Sawnee! Keep an eye out on the trails for the barred tunnels that used to be gold mines in the 1800s. Prospectors once found gold in the streams that ran through Sawnee Mountain. While you cannot go inside the mines for safety reasons, it’s still exhilaratingly fun to peer inside and imagine the past.
5. One of the Best Views in Georgia
Experienced hikers will tell you that the view atop Sawnee Mountain is easily one of the most beautiful in Georgia. Get ready for stunning views of the Blue Ridge Mountains that’ll leave you speechless. You can also spot Amicalola Falls, Brasstown Bald, and Yonah Mountain. If you’re lucky enough to catch the sunset, the sight is spectacular!
6. Plenty of Photo Opportunities
If you’re looking for some social-media-worthy photo opportunities, you won’t be disappointed. Sawnee Mountain has tons of scenic spots where you can strike a pose. Of course, you’ll have to snap a photo at the top of the mountain to show off your hard work and that gorgeous view.
7. An Unforgettable Picnic
Have you heard that food tastes better when you’re on a mountain? It’s true! After the hard work of hiking to the peak, you’ll enjoy every bite of your picnic that much more. Whether you decide to bring a blanket and eat on the peak itself or utilize Sawnee’s picnic tables at the trailheads, it’ll make the occasion even more memorable.
8. Magical Fairy Houses
Just a short walk from the visitor’s center, you’ll find what’s known as The Fairy Trail. This was a project of Girl Scout Troup 13730 and is great for small children. You’ll find miniature houses, caves and sparkle-covered rocks. There are even signs encouraging you to build your own fairy houses there!
9. Visitors Center
At some point during your escapade, make sure you check out the 5,600-square-foot visitor center. This impressive center features interactive exhibits, a relaxing area, outdoor games, a gift shop and more. You can pick out a special trinket to commemorate your hike!
10. Free Parking and Restrooms
Another excellent reason to visit Sawnee is that the adventure is free! It’s a nice outing with the family, friends, or on a date that won’t cost you a thing. You can also rest assured you won’t have to squat down in the woods here. Visitors often call out the restrooms’ cleanliness compared to other hiking spots.
