Sawnee Mountain Preserve
963 acres of ridge and forest, with a visitor center at the base and the Indian Seats overlook near the summit. Also, dogs are not permitted on the trails.
Greenways & trails
In short, eleven miles of concrete and boardwalk run along Big Creek, flat and shaded most of the way.
Parks & recreation
Also, expect playgrounds, ball fields, picnic shelters and four dog parks across the county.
FEATURED
Big Creek Greenway, end to end
Specifically, this is a concrete and wood boardwalk through creek bottomland, open to walkers, runners and bikes. In addition, five trailheads run between McFarland Parkway and Sawnee Mountain Preserve.
Big Creek Greenway
Five trailheads; restrooms and ample parking at Halcyon and Fowler Park.
Indian Seats Trail
In total, about 500 feet of climbing leads to the overlook. Short on time? For example, the out-and-back from the visitor center tops out in roughly a mile and a half.
Eagle’s Beak Park
Here, a flat loop around the field pairs with a little over a mile of dirt nature trail and a kayak launch on the Etowah River.
Charleston Park
Meanwhile, this rooty, rolling loop system runs along the Lake Lanier shoreline, shared by hikers and mountain bikers. Additionally, boat ramps, restrooms and picnic grills sit at the trailhead.
Caney Creek Preserve
Also, this short wooded loop suits a quick walk, with one of the county’s four dog parks at the entrance.
